about

I recorded all the instruments for this one in my little recording/livingroom space but knew it needed my friend, producer and bassist extraordinaire Jim Reilley to funk it up so I masked up and swung by his place for a quick safely distanced mobile session.

lyrics

I thought I saw you in the burning sun

But it was the house and the sky was gone

I thought I heard you in the evening air

But it was the roar of what wasn’t there

There’s a hole in the soul of America

Where the slaughtered go,
where the forgotten lie

Where the dreamers sleep and I ask why?

I thought I saw you by the highway sign
But you were passing bad checks in the grocery line

Down on the ground grasping for air

With a knee on your neck and now you’re not there

There’s a hole in the soul of America

Where the slaughtered go,
where the forgotten lie

Where the dreamers sleep and I ask why?

I thought I saw your parents at the border wall

Where they ripped you away and that’s not all

Now you’re alone in a nice room they say

Looks like a cage to me where they put you away

There’s a hole in the soul of America

Where the slaughtered go,
where the forgotten lie

Where the dreamers sleep and I ask why?

I thought I saw you on TV at the city hall

You were yelling for rights and standing tall

Now you’re flat on your back with a tube down your throat

I hope you get well, this ain’t no joke!

There’s a hole in the soul of America

Where the slaughtered go,
where the forgotten lie

Where the dreamers sleep and I ask why?
