about

A year before my dad died at 90 years old he took me on a drive and led me down an old dirt road about 60 miles west of the Twin Cities and took me to the top of the hill at the cemetery where my mom's ashes and his were to be laid to rest when the time came. He pointed out stones and told me stories of people long gone but spirits still very much alive to him.

lyrics

Top Of The Hill

Well, my daddy told me about his great granddad Joe

Who erected a stone where they buried his bones

Well, he took me to the top of the hill

So I could see what was really real

All of those old tombstones in the ground

All of them spirits sitting around

Some of those stones, they’re from the seventeen hundreds

How many Indians needed to go?

So old Joe could get to the top of the hill?

I don’t need no stone

Oh let the wind be my home

Just keep on singing my song

That’s how my spirit lives on

And when the singings all done

And you hear the last chord strum

Just hum with the wind

Because I’m gone baby I’m gone

Gone baby I’m gone

Well my mama told me about the man from Galilee

He came in peace, still they nailed him to a tree

Well the devil took him to the top of the hill
Tried to sell him what he said was real

All of those humans scattered around

All of the suffering going down

Some of those folks, thought they were king

Until they realized that they’d shed the blood

Of the one, who would get them to the top of the hill

I don’t need no stone

Oh let the wind be my home

Just keep on singing my song

That’s how my spirit lives on

And when the singings all done

And you hear the last chord strum

Just hum with the wind

Because I’m gone baby I’m gone

Gone baby I’m gone
